If you're importing frozen meat from Brazil, every carton you receive should carry a SIF (Serviço de Inspeção Federal) stamp. It's the federal government's guarantee that the product was processed under continuous veterinary inspection.
What SIF covers
SIF certification is issued by DIPOA (Departamento de Inspeção de Produtos de Origem Animal), part of Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA). It covers:
- Sanitary conditions — the plant meets federal hygiene and infrastructure standards.
- Veterinary oversight — government veterinarians are present during production.
- Labelling compliance — product labels meet regulatory requirements.
- Export eligibility — only SIF-certified plants can export. Not all SIF plants are export-approved; the plant must also be listed for your specific destination country.
SIF number and country lists
Each certified plant has a unique SIF number (e.g. SIF 1234). For export, the plant must appear on the destination country's approved-establishment list. For example, China maintains a list of Brazilian plants authorized to ship to China — and a plant losing its listing means immediate trade suspension.
Why this matters to importers
- A SIF number alone doesn't guarantee the plant can export to your country. Always cross-check the plant against your government's approved list.
- Plants can be suspended or delisted. Monitor status periodically.
- Different product types (beef, poultry, pork) may have separate approvals even within the same plant.
How to verify
MAPA publishes approved plant lists on its website. Your country's food safety authority will also maintain its own list. A reliable exporter will proactively share their SIF documentation and current country-approval status.
Verifying SIF status before placing an order avoids customs rejection and potential quarantine costs at your port.
